At Pink Property, we spend most of our time thinking about tenants - finding them, looking after them, keeping them happy. But a short drive from our office, Beverley Minster has a pair of residents who've been returning year after year without ever filling in a referencing form.

The peregrine falcons are back. And if you've never taken a moment to look up when you're in Beverley, you really should.

A Building That Ticks Every Box

The falcons first arrived at Beverley Minster after being spotted in residence, prompting the RSPB to install a dedicated nest box on top of the building to support safe breeding. In property terms, the Minster is exactly what a peregrine is looking for. These birds naturally nest on cliff faces - typically around a third of the way down - and have adapted brilliantly to tall urban structures like churches, cathedrals and bridges that replicate those conditions.

Height, solid stonework, open space for hunting, and a reliable food supply nearby. It's a location that makes complete sense - and once a peregrine pair finds somewhere that works, they tend to stay.

What Makes Them So Remarkable

It's worth taking a moment to appreciate just how extraordinary these birds are. Peregrine falcons are the fastest living things on the planet, capable of reaching speeds of around 200mph when diving for prey. They mate for life, returning to the same nest site year after year. The nesting season runs from around late March through to early summer - the pair incubate their eggs for 33 to 35 days, and the chicks are ready to fledge after another five or six weeks.

They don't build a traditional nest. Instead, the male scrapes out a shallow depression in whatever grit or debris has collected on the ledge - no materials brought in, no real construction. Just a spot they've chosen and committed to. Every spring, Beverley gets a front-row seat to the whole thing.

Not Without Their Critics

It's only fair to mention that the falcons' arrival wasn't universally celebrated. Some local residents and pigeon fanciers raised concerns about the impact on garden birds and racing pigeons, with one local pigeon keeper pointing out that churches aren't the falcons' natural habitat. The Minster's vicar at the time noted that peregrines help deter feral pigeons, which cause real damage to the stonework - a practical benefit alongside the wildlife interest.

It's a genuinely interesting tension, and one that plays out in towns and cities across the country wherever peregrines have moved in. The birds are a protected species, so their presence is here to stay - but it's worth acknowledging that not everyone in Beverley greeted them with unqualified enthusiasm.

What It Says About Beverley

The presence of nesting peregrines does reflect something real about the area. These birds thrive in urban environments that combine tall structures with an abundant prey base and relatively little disturbance. Beverley - with its historic architecture, open green spaces like Beverley Westwood, and relatively low-density town centre - provides exactly that kind of balance.

It's also just a genuinely lovely thing to have on your doorstep. Each spring, locals and wildlife enthusiasts track the falcons' progress from first sighting to fledging. It's one of those quiet community rituals that you don't really find in places without a strong sense of identity.

What This Has to Do With Property

Admittedly, not much - directly. We're not suggesting the falcons add square footage or improve your EPC rating.

But at Pink Property, we've always believed that where people choose to live is about far more than the building itself. It's about what's around it - the character of the place, the things that make it feel like somewhere rather than anywhere.

Beverley has that in abundance. Period properties, excellent schools, independent shops, Beverley Westwood on your doorstep, and - if you time it right - the sight of the fastest animal on Earth hunting above one of the most beautiful buildings in East Yorkshire.

If you're thinking about buying, selling or renting in Beverley, we'd love to help. We know this area well - and we never get tired of talking about it.
